Oral Pathology and Medicine is the specialization of Dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of the diseases of the oral cavity, the perioral areas, the bone of the jaws and the salivary glands.

Most people believe that all of the ulcers that occur on the tongue, the palate, the  lips, the cheeks, the floor of the mouth or the gums are aphthous stomatitis.

In fact, many diseases may occur in the oral mucosa (with local or systemic etiology i.e. there is a general health problem) such as:

 

• Infections caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses.

• Ulcers from self-injury, dentures, old crowns or broken teeth.

• Cysts and tumors.

• Skin diseases which appear only in the oral mucosae.

• Adverse effects of medications and allergies.

• Blood and metabolic diseases.

• Digestive system diseases.

• Precancerous lesions that can be diagnosed and treated in early stages avoiding the great danger of Oral Cancer.

• Bad breath, dry mouth, “Burning Mouth Syndrome”, flavor loss and more.

 

The Stomatologist is the specialized doctor who has the knowledge, experience and clinical skills to help you. Being advised of your medical history and with the necessary diagnostic workup, we suggest the appropriate medical or surgical treatment. Additionally, we can be very useful in cancer patients undergoing chemo / radiotherapy with oral painful manifestations.
